…Gabriel García Márquez, for his novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude. (Runner-up was Larry Niven’s The Ringworld Engineers).
I acknowledge, this is a fairly dull outcome to a fairly dull competition this year. I don’t think I read many more than 5 books of fiction by living writers. Will try to do better next year (I have plenty on my shelves).
Nothing wrong with that – a most worthy winner
Worthy, yes. I guess he had to win at some point. But to me, it’s seemed inevitable since May, and I’ve perhaps even avoided books which might have toppled him from his perch; whereas usually I’m scrambling around in December trying to find some of value to award the prize to.
The Ringworld Engineers is very good. I’m saddened to see it come in second, though.
It is sad, but we can’t have sci-fi winning. – Still, I’ve got The Ringworld Throne to read this year, so there’s always hope.
